In 2021, COVAX, the global initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, led by the SPHS members Gavi, World Health Organization, and UNICEF, together with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), delivered almost 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses. On 15 January 2022, the organisation delivered its one billionth dose to Rwanda.
COVAX is leading the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history, with deliveries to 144 countries to date.
But the work that has gone into this milestone is only a reminder of the work that remains.
“COVAX has delivered more than 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines in just under a year – an unprecedented achievement in global public health given all the well-known challenges that were faced in 2021. In 2022, we can help break COVID-19 by adapting our support to ensure doses are used rapidly, get into arms safely, are responsive to country preferences and coverage targets. This will help the world to reduce pandemic risks and uncertainties.”
