With COVID-19 vaccination dramatically increasing waste and energy demands in the health sector, SPHS agencies are supporting countries to green their vaccine delivery. This includes reducing, recycling and safely disposing of immunisation waste, and deploying renewable energy solutions, such as portable solar power battery refrigerators, across the cold chain for COVID-19 vaccines. UNDP, UN Environment Programme, WHO and UNICEF are working with Engineers Without Borders and Health Care Without Harm, among other partners, to support COVID-19 vaccine waste management assessments in ten countries.
